Introduction: Life Skill Education is recognized as an importantpart of education. Stress management, time management, dealing with emotions and effective communication are a few life skills necessary to deal with real life situations. The curriculum framers advocate that these life skills be integrated into the teaching learning process. Presence of life skill education will ensure that learning is more effective. Undue emphasis on the intellectual aspects alone will result in lop sided personalities. For human resource development to truly ensue out of the educational system, it is necessary to consider life skill education more seriously. The present study was a small attempt to nurture one important life skill, viz. time management among students of Class XII.
Statement of Research study: The research study “TO STUDY THE DEVELOPMENT OF TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS AMONG CLASS XII STUDENTS OF ST.MARY’S JR.COLLEGE, KALINA, MUMBAI” was taken up with the objective to find out if a well designed programme for Time Management would be effective to develop Time Management skills in students of Class XII Commerce.
Need for the Study: This problem was chosen by the researcher as years of experience had shown the researcher that students need time management skills to help them improve academic performance.
Objectives:
1. To identify time wasting activities in the schedule of Class XII students
2. To inculcate in Class XII students skills of time management through a systematic programme
Hypotheses of the study: Two major hypotheses were formulated for the study.
(i) Students of Class XII are influenced by time wasting activities and hence are poor at time management
(ii)Skills of time management can be inculcated in students of Class XII through a systematic programme
Sample: The sample chosen for the study was a purposivesample consisting of fifty students of Class XII C, Commerce, St. Mary’s Jr. College, Kalina, Santacruz. The sample was homogenous in terms of academic performance, age, intelligence and socio economic status. There were 25 girls and 25 boys in the sample.
Research Methodology: The type of research can be described as Action Research incorporating the Experimental Method. A Pre Test - Post Test one group design was used for the study. A programme for nurturing Time Management Skills was the intervening programme used for treatment.
Description of the Programme: This ten day programme was designed by the researcher after careful deliberation with a few experts and by referring to some books and websites on the topic. The pre and post programme Time Management Skills of the students were ascertained through a five point rating scale which included twenty statements. A checklist was used to find the presence of time wasters in students.
The programme used a constructivist approach. It was based on the premise that an individual, who is mature enough to solve his/her own problems, can do so with necessary mentoring. Thus the programme led the students to identify their time wasting activities. They formulated strategies to deal with the same. Since the strategies were formulated by the students themselves, they were more likely to use them. Students were trained in the use of Time Matrix consisting of four quadrants to classify their activities depending upon the urgency and importance of the activities. Some tips in time management like effective multitasking were introduced. Students were made aware of personal traits that lead to time loss. Eg The inability to say a firm “No” if necessary may hamper time management. The inclusion of ‘to-do’ lists, daily schedule planners and prioritization helped students to find systematic ways to handle time.
The researcher also included face to face interaction with an academic achiever who had handled her time effectively. This served as a motivation to the students. They were able to learn from the experiences of their peers. Another interesting strategy used was the incorporation of Role play. Situations were given on the spot and students had to enact the same by assuming some roles. Others observed and gave their feedback. All situations involved problem solving with respect to time management. This was a very useful way to nurture the required skills as it gave feedback from self as well as from others.
Findings of the study:
The study has revealed the following findings:
1. Students of Class XII do not possess satisfactory Time management Skills and are hence in need of special training to inculcate the same.
2. It is possible to develop Time Management skills in students of Class XII by following a systematic programme designed to suit their needs. The programme developed and executed by the researcher has shown an overall increase of 46.95 % in Time Management skills of students. In case of boys, there was an increase of 54.17% and in case of girls; there was an increase of 40.6 %. The research shows that adolescent students are capable of self enhancement through right guidance and mentoring.
3. Students of Class XII indulge in many time wasting activities and they need guidance to minimize these activities.
4. Boys indulge in more time wasting activities as compared to girls. Top six time wasters in boys were: excess T.V watching, listening to music excessively, too much of sports, eating snacks between meals, excess use of mobile, over indulgence in mobile or computer games. Among girls, listening to music excessively, too much of T.V watching, fretting over personal problems, doing other people’s work, over indulgence in mobile or computer games and over use of mobiles were the top six time wasters.
5.2 Conclusions of the Research:
On basis of the above findings the following conclusions are derived:
1. Class XII being a crucial year in the academic life of a student, time management is an important deciding factor in their academic performance. Hence students in Class XII (or in general all adolescents) need to be trained in Time Management skills.
2. Prioritizing tasks, timely intervention in case of time wasters, careful multitasking, planning for the day or the week and reflection are healthy time management habits. Development of time management habits should be encouraged.
3. Students are influenced by the experiences of peers who have performed well. Successful students should be used as role models and their experiences should be made known to the others.
4. Proper Time Management will reduce stress in students and enhance their academic performance. This will result in overall Human Resource Development.
5. Skills as Time Management are carried over to other areas. A person good at managing time with respect to studies is likely to do the same at his work place. Hence healthy habits of time management instilled at student level will help them be better employees.
6. Time Management influences other life skills as stress management, decision making and emotional intelligence. Hence an integrated programme for Life Skills Development is necessary at adolescent stage in the student life.
